
Maureen Bunyan is a broadcast news pioneer based in Washington, DC. She co-anchored WUSA for 21 years (1973–1995) and later joined WJLA. She co-founded the International Women’s Media Foundation and the National Association of Black Journalists. She has earned numerous honors, including Washingtonian of the Year and induction into the Washington Chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists’ Hall of Fame. She holds a Master’s Degree from Harvard University’s Graduate School of Education and studied journalism at Columbia University. She was interviewed by The HistoryMakers, the Digital Repository for the Black Experience, and received the Foremother Award from the National Center for Health Research. Maureen maintains strong ties with her Guyanese heritage and native Aruba. She mentors young people in tandem with the Aruban Ministry of Education, Harvard University, and other institutions—work for which she was knighted by The Netherlands in 2014.
